Overview: The loss of someone important can initiate a journey with many psychological ramifications. This workshop examines some current theories and research on grief and mourning; including attachment, psychoanalytic, and existential frameworks. The workshop also utilizes some of the author’s research on daughters grieving their dads to encourage psychologists in developing their clinical approach to working with clients’ grief and loss.

Individuals in attendance will be able to:

  1. Articulate an approach to loss that includes “continuing bond and connections”.

  2. Identify some components of their explicit and implicit current and evolving approaches to loss and grief.

  3. See the role that culture may play in the experience of loss and grief.

Speaker: Lorraine Mangione, Ph.D. teaches doctoral students in the Department of Clinical Psychology at Antioch University New England. Interests include group therapy, psychodynamic and relational theory, clinical training and supervision, loss and grief, existentialism, women’s lifespan development and aging, and psychological meaning of Bruce Springsteen’s work. She publishes on loss and mourning, including father/daughter relationships, culture, creativity, and religion and spirituality.
